Sound like an adventure you and your family want to add to the must-do list?
Start your journey on the TranzAlpine train journey
On a journey of 223 km, your family will be amazed by the incredible New Zealand scenery along the way. From rolling through the Canterbury Plains, dramatic river gorges, and vast viaducts all before reaching the grandeur of the Southern Alps. National Geographic called this one of the greatest train journeys in the world, so don't miss out on an opportunity to get your family window seats to these views. Booking online is easy; search our timetable and fare types, and we will be waiting to welcome you on board.
Arriving at Greymouth iSite there is plenty of options for rental cars; Mr Izzyboy and his family used Thrifty. With a pickup and drop-off outside Greymouth train station, you'll be off on your adventure in no time.
The West Coast is full of must-do activities
A pick of some of the best things to do in Greymouth and surrounding areas are;
West Coast Tree Top Walk, Hokitika
If you are not afraid of heights, this treetop walk lets you explore a native Rimu and Kamahi tree canopy on foot. Take a walk around a purpose-built viewing platform at 47m high and experience a different perspective on the rugged West Coast. With an onsite café, this is a great place to stop and unwind with the sights and sounds of the forest before continuing your West Coast adventure.
Pancake Rocks and Blowholes, Punakaiki
This famous New Zealand attraction is one of the most visited places on the West Coast, we don't need to tell you why! If you haven't heard of Pancake Rocks, these natural limestone formations formed 30 million years ago and were raised above sea level by a series of earthquakes. The formations that you see today are a result of sea, wind and rain erosion. Pancake Rocks are just a short drive from Greymouth, this is a must-see for anyone visiting the coast and, best of all, it is free! If all the talk of Pancakes has started your sweet tooth cravings, the Pancake Rocks Café is famous for its pancake stacks! Chocolate Duet or Berries and Cream, anyone?
On yer bike, Greymouth
It wouldn't be the West Coast without some adrenaline-filled muddy adventure! On yer bike is an off-road adventure company, with a fleet of off road machines. They have options for the whole family to enjoy—take a self-drive adventure on quad bikes, or sit back and let the professionals show you how it's done in ex-military vehicles. Check out their tour options to decide your level of thrill-seeking adventure.
