The TranzAlpine Scenic Train and Punakaiki
Board the TranzAlpine train in Christchurch for a spectacular journey across the Southern Alps. Surrounded by striking natural landscapes, you’ll soon discover why this is one of the world’s greatest train journeys.
Once you arrive into Greymouth you will set off for the next part of your adventure. A short 45-minute drive will take you to the famous Punakaiki Pancake Rocks. After spending around 40 minutes observing the wild west coast, you will depart for your final destination for the day, Copthorne Hotel. Arriving around 3:40pm. Enjoy the remainder of the day exploring Greymouth.
Explore the West Coast
Today you will explore the immaculate Hokitika Gorge and meet the ancient rainforests of the West Coast. Begin this exciting day by joining your guide at 8:15am in the Copthorne reception. Your first stop will be Hokitika Gorge, a spectacular natural attraction with vivid turquoise water, discovered on a gentle walk through the native New Zealand bush and over a swing bridge. Next, enjoy the sky-high experience of the West Coast Treetop walk which takes you up into the canopy of the coast’s giant native podocarp trees. After a quick coffee break, you will re-join the TranzAlpine train at 1:15pm en route to Christchurch.
An epic voyage on the TranzAlpine Train
One of the biggest highlights of your West Coast adventure will be the journey.
Climbing aboard the TranzAlpine in Christchurch, your West Coast discovery break will start in relaxing style as you ease back in your reclined seat and enjoy the views through your panoramic window.
Along the way, you'll see epic vistas, travel the edges of the ice-fed Waimakariri River, traverse the Southern Alps, and see miles of native beech forest.
The TranzAlpine is one of the world's great train journeys covering 223 kilometres (139 miles) one-way, taking just under 5 hours. You’ll traverse the majestic Canterbury Plains, to the backdrop of the mighty Southern Alps - the journey of a lifetime. And with our licensed bar serving drinks throughout the afternoon, this will certainly be a relaxing end to your journey.
