The TranzAlpine Scenic Train
Board the TranzAlpine train in Christchurch for a spectacular journey across the Southern Alps. Surrounded by striking natural landscapes, you’ll soon discover why this is one of the world’s greatest train journeys. Enjoy morning tea and lunch onboard as we travel across the Canterbury plains and into the mountains, meandering over braided rivers and past alpine lakes.
On arrival on the West Coast, you’ll be transferred to your accommodation before having the rest of the day to explore Greymouth.
Discover the region’s gold mining history at Shantytown Heritage Park, a faithfully recreated 1900’s pioneer town, or add on a tour to Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, the most visited natural attraction on the West Coast. In Greymouth, you’ll find Monteith’s Brewery, the original home of craft brewing in New Zealand, with a hearty dinner menu, beer tastings and even a brewery tour.
Exploring the West Coast
Begin with breakfast at the hotel, with a buffet of cooked and continental selections, then you have the option to add on a tour or enjoy free time in Greymouth.
Tour options include the iconic Hokitika Gorge, a spectacular natural attraction with vivid turquoise water, discovered on a gentle walk through native New Zealand bush and over a swing bridge. Or if you have a head for heights, the West Coast Treetop walk takes you up into the canopy of the coast’s giant native podocarp trees.
This afternoon, transfer back to Greymouth Railway Station to board the TranzAlpine journey back to Christchurch.

The TranzAlpine is one of the world's great train journeys covering 223 kilometres (139 miles) one-way, taking just under 5 hours. You’ll traverse the majestic Canterbury Plains, to the backdrop of the mighty Southern Alps - the journey of a lifetime. And with our licensed bar serving drinks throughout the afternoon, this will certainly be a relaxing end to your journey.
