TranzAlpine service update
- Service: TranzAlpine
- Dates affected: Wednesday 4 to Friday 20 November 2026 (estimated)
- Route: Train between Christchurch and Arthur’s Pass, bus between Arthur’s Pass and Greymouth
- Status: Ongoing
What’s happening
A coal wagon derailed on the evening of 3 November, causing significant damage to the track used by the TranzAlpine. Repairs are expected to affect services until Friday 20 November. This is an estimate, and we’ll confirm dates as the work progresses.
Until then, the TranzAlpine will run between Christchurch and Arthur’s Pass, with a bus connection between Arthur’s Pass and Greymouth.
Already booked?
If you’re booked to travel during this period, we’ll contact you via email using the details on your booking. You have three options:
- Continue your journey: travel by train between Christchurch and Arthur’s Pass, and by bus between Arthur’s Pass and Greymouth. Because this isn’t the full rail experience you booked, we’ll refund $65 per person for Scenic or $195 per person for Scenic Plus.
- Rebook: You can move your booking to another available TranzAlpine departure at a later date, free of charge.
Alternatively, you can transfer your booking to an available Coastal Pacific journey between Christchurch and Picton at no additional cost, subject to availability. - Cancel: get a full refund, less any credit card charges.
If you booked through our website, you can either email us or use the form below to let us know which option you’d like and our team will get back to you. If you booked through our Travel Centre, a travel agent or an isite please contact them directly.
