Discover three floors of magnificent galleries

Standing tall and mighty in the lush gardens of Auckland domain sits one of New Zealand’s most important museums and war memorials. Auckland Museum is certainly an impressive building, but it also holds over 4 million unique items and has occupied this exact location since 1929. From significant artefacts, exhibits, events, cultural displays and beyond – there is much to see, do and learn.

Something around every corner

Just a stone's throw from Auckland central, this museum is easily accessible by foot, car, train, or bus.

Strolling up the granite and basalt paving, you’ll be greeted by an impressive entrance. Bronze doors adorned with a beautiful poppy design commemorating world wars’ fallen soldiers welcomes you when stepping through the grand entrance.

Once inside, you won’t know where you look first. Will it be the towering Tyrannosaurus Rex fossils seemingly floating above, or perhaps the amazing architecture will draw you in. From guided tours to events and ever-changing exhibits, the talented museum curators have so much for you to explore.

Auckland Museum continues to change exhibits regularly. However, no matter what is on display, it will be tantalising. Learn about Māori culture and history, how war impacted New Zealand and its people, and discover the wildlife that once roamed beautiful Aotearoa. The fun doesn’t stop there – get lost in the exhibits as you uncover Ancient Egypt and its powerful pharaohs.

With so much to explore, you'll undoubtedly need some refreshment en route. So head to Tuitui Museum Bistro & Café to fill up on some much-needed kai (food).
